Exercise 16: Experimenting with texture
Collect a range of objects with different textures. Make a series of 5cm squares in your sketchbook. Use pencil or pen to experiment with depicting the textures.
I used a variety of items – string, a dishcloth, garlic, woven basket, fake fur, pumice, banana skin, wood grain, old nailbrush, bubble wrap, shaving brush, metal, beads, and lace. As I noted in my sketch book, I found it hard to find a wide array of textures, as many of them seemed to recur throughout our flat. I was interested to note that the absence of explanatory lines or colour makes the depiction of texture much harder to create.
