Exercise 17: Frottage
Thoroughly enjoyed the frottage exercise. A most addictive pursuit.
It was curious to see how different some textures looked when reproduced on paper via frottage, the texture of three-dimensional objects suddenly appearing in two-dimensional form.
Would seem to have limited use as a direct component of a drawing, but worth exploring. Could be a useful tool for discovering a new range of marks to describe textures drawn by hand (as opposed to being produced via rubbings).
The more obviously representative marks (lettering, decorative design, and so on) would be harder to incorporate into a piece of work, perhaps, unless the piece had a more ‘assembled’ feel (collage, etc).
