Exercise 52: Stance

Look for the centre of gravity in a standing figure. Mark the central axis in your sketches. Change poses every 2-5 minutes.

Stance 1

Fairly self-explanatory sketches, these. All were standing poses, all took in the region of five minutes to do (apart from the sixth, where the poses took a couple of minutes each). I’ve marked the centre of gravity lightly on each of them (with the exception of the fifth, for some reason, where I would put it as being on the right heel up through to the top of the spine). The model had a slightly longer than average torso, and I noticed it was hard to resist the urge to snap back into ‘usual’ proportions. I didn’t, though. Think these convey the respective stances quite well – the fifth especially, perhaps, as it has a sense of movement, too.
